Teen Town Hall Coming Thursday
Commissioner Weekly and Special Guest Hosting
Conversation with Area High School Students
Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly and past American Idol star Justin Guarini will host a Teen Town Hall from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday in the Commission Chambers on the first floor of the Clark County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway.
At the event, youth will have a chance to speak with representatives from apprentice programs and schools of higher education before the Town Hall-style meeting begins. The commissioner will begin the Town Hall meeting at 9 a.m. with a discussion of issues such as school violence, entertainers as role models, school dress codes and the benefits and dangers of Internet sites like myspace.com. The attendees will also have the chance to ask the commissioner, Guarini and their peers about various other topics.
Approximately 200 students from eight area high schools will attend the Teen Town Hall, which will be aired live from 9 to 10 a.m. on Clark County Television (CCTV) cable Channel 4.
Todays teens are faced with many challenges, Weekly said. Many are dealing with some serious issues and pressures every day, and at the same time these young adults are wrestling with what to do with their life after high school. This forum gives them a chance to raise their concerns and have them discussed in a safe and organized environment.
The participating schools are the Advanced Technologies Academy, Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy, Canyon Springs High School, Cheyenne High School, Desert Pines High School, Las Vegas Academy, Rancho High School and Western High School.
The organizations on hand before the Town Hall meeting will include the College of Southern Nevada, University of Nevada Las Vegas, Nevada State College, Local Union Painters & Allied Trades Joint Apprenticeship Training Program, Plasterers & Cement Masons Apprenticeship, The Center for Academic Enrichment Outreach, and the North Las Vegas Police Cadet Program.
This event is not open to the public, and media interested in attending are asked to contact county Public Information Officer Dan Kulin at 455-5534.
